Museum

Las colecciones que guardan los museos e instituciones de la ciudad son de significativo valor, y están celosamente conservadas y debidamente exhibidas por prestigiosas instituciones, con propósitos de estudio, educación y deleite por parte de la comunidad local y de los visitantes.

La historia, la música, la pintura, la fotografía, la escultura, la etnografía, las ciencias naturales, los minerales, la tecnología y la numismática tienen, cada uno, reservado un espacio en los museos de Medellín, y ellos se presentan como una alternativa para que el turista se acerque y conozca más acerca de nuestra región. Algunos de estos museos tienen como sede edificaciones con valor arquitectónico y patrimonial, lo que les otorga un motivo adicional para ser considerados en la agenda del turista.

The Historical Archive safeguards, organizes, and construes documentation with historical value. Documents that have been put forth by agencies of the administration and government of the region of Antioquia, from Spanish rule to 1970, are available to the public. This cultural heritage has been enriched through other documented corpus obtained from the Santa Fe de Antioquia City Council, the Scribes of Medellín, a photographic archive, and a Graphic and Cartographic Collection
Hours: Monday, 10:00 AM to 4:45 PM. Tuesday  to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:45 PM.

Founded in 1952, the Library is a cultural reference for the region and the country. It offers the following services: research and reference, children’s activities, home delivery book lending, audiovisual shows, conference cycles, art exhibits, and reading rooms. Also, located in two separate areas of its “Tower of Memory” building, the Antioquia Hall and the Photographic Archive, the Library maintains a documentary and image legacy. The Photographic Archive, with some 1.7 million images in various formats dating back to 1848, is one of the largest of its kind in Latin America.
Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM. Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.

This Historic Cultural Monument has been divulging the history and culture of Tango since 1995. The Casa holds important document, audio, photography, and audiovisual collections. Some commemorative plaques witness the visit of renown political, entertainment, and literary figures. One such plaque was dedicated on occasion of Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges’s visit to the Casa.

In what was once the house and workshop of Pedro Nel Gómez, one of the greatest exponents of Latin American art, one can admire an ample selection of his artistic legacy. The collection includes an important samp-ling of murals, a large collection of oil and water-color paintings, numerous etchings, as well as urban and architectural drawnings and projects. As a whole, Pedro Nel Gómez’s work is an interesting synthesis of the social and political history of Colombia, of the cultural traditions of the Antioquia region, and an expression of his particular criterion on americanista ideas.

At this venue, the tourist can visit the Sea Museum and its display of different fauna from the Colombian Caribbean Sea, or the Butterfly Paradise with 16 different butterfly species. The museum also holds 20th century Egyptian and Persian furniture ex-hibiting mother-of-pearl and ivory inlays.
